It’s the time of year for ticks…and lots of them around my place! Even with chickens roaming around the yard, pecking at everything they can, ticks are still making their way to my girls.
When bitten by a tick, it’s important to remove the entire tick to help protect against disease. Some of the diseases ticks can carry (depending on the tick):
Lyme Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever Tickborne Relasping Fever Tularemia Babsios One of my favorite ways to safely remove a tick without pain is by using tea tree oil.
Tea tree oil is antifungal, antibacterial, antiseptic and antiviral. I love this oil and make certain that I always have it on hand! The simple instructions for removing a tick is:
Place a few drops of tea tree oil on cotton ball or Q-Tip
Hold cotton ball over tick for at least 60 seconds. This helps the tick to let go easier since the oil block its breathing pores.
Remove tick as close to the head as possible with tweezers
After tick is removed, place another drop of tea tree oil on bite to prevent infection
Another thing you can do is to tape the cotton ball containing tea tree oil over the tick and leave it for 30 minutes. This is an even safer way to ensure that the entire tick is removed.
I used this once and just a small amount of the oil caused the tick to detach itself and made removal much easier.

I have also been hearing a lot of anecdotal info on Thieve's Oil as a Lyme preventative when used on the spot where a tick was removed.

When I used the Tea Tree oil on the tick, it dropped off instantly!! I have never seen a Tick just let go without a fight. Obviously you dont want to use it a preventative because it only works if the oil is applied to the tick and tea tree oil will dry the shit out of your skin if you use alot.

Tea Tree Oil is one of those 'miracle' medicines... Use it for dang near everything... Years ago, (I do mean years), I got my first bottle, I had gotten a bad cold. When I got home, I actually took a slug and swallowed it down. My God, thought I was gonna die... Didn't die... Cold went bye bye... I am never without tea tree oil. Used liberally, it will cure most anythin'... But sure don't recommend sluggin' it down... lol...
